Don't Buy Travel Protection During This Pandemic Until You Read This

As the COVID-19 pandemic set in, many travel plans were rudely and abruptly canceled and travelers were in for a shock. They quickly realized that their travel insurance did not cover pandemics—and honestly, no one would have predicted these events.

Travel protection is extremely important. However, some factors and events are not covered by most travel insurance. These include; war, terrorist attacks, high-risk sporting activities e.g. skydiving, and episodes of psychological disorders. Health risks and foreseeable threats are also typically uninsured, and these can range from hurricanes to disease outbreaks (epidemics and pandemics).

Travel insurance is complicated and travelers need to be well versed on what’s covered by their insurer. Here, we will detail a shortlist of what travel insurance does not typically cover. That being said, it is extremely important to communicate with your provider on their policy and what they can and cannot cover.

  1. Fear/ Anxiety about traveling

If you’re scared of traveling for a pre-booked holiday. Your provider will not cover you. This includes fear of contracting COVID-19 or any other diseases.

  1. Pre-existing Medical Condition

Most providers do not cover pre-existing medical conditions. Although, some exceptions and waivers are depending on your provider. Be sure to understand their policy before choosing an insurer.

  1. A second surge of COVID-19

If your travel destination gets a second wave of the disease and is shut down, or you’re afraid of traveling to the destination. You will not be covered by the provider.

  1. Ignoring Travel Advisories

If you choose to travel to locations that are already high risk and have been considered unsafe, do not expect to be covered.

Travel insurance companies make their money from unclaimed insurance. Therefore, situations that have a high likelihood of happening and are widespread are rarely covered. It is important to find an insurer who is capable of meeting all your needs and concerns. Do your due diligence and research before signing up with a provider. Talk to travel agents who have experience and will be able to advise you on what you need to be insured for and give suggestions on potential providers.

In the next article, we take a look at how to choose the right provider during a pandemic. Because let’s face it, COVID-19 is here for a while longer and we need to have the right protection.
